Larval Mask Workshop

  • Church of Clown 2400 Bayshore Boulevard San Francisco, CA, 94134 United States (map)

Uncover the primal soul of your creative brain!

In this play-based workshop, performers will unleash their inner dramatic narratives using classic Larval masks popularized by Jacques Lecoq. Inspired by carnival masks in Basel, Switzerland, Lecoq built bold facial shapes to train and embody worlds of new personalities within each unconventional mask. In this unique workshop at Church of Clown, mask maker and teacher Jamin Jollo will guide students through a world of improvised play inspired by Larval/Basel masks to hone delightfully eccentric physicality and kindle the flames of character discovery.

Jamin Jollo is a theatre maker and mime artist living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Influenced by artists such as OSF fight choreographer U. Jonathan Toppo and master mime James Donlon, Jamin explores physical theatre through mime, mask work, and calls upon neoclassical clown training to devise theatrical shows ranging from original burlesque songs to featured characters in stage plays across the U.S. Jamin has a BFA in theater performance and has appeared in numerous play at Shotgun Players and Marin Shakespeare Company. He is the mask teacher and Technical Director at Church of Clown.
